Protecting Our Hair From Too Much Sun
As warmer weather approaches it’s important to take a moment to revamp your seasonal hair routine!
Did you know that UVA and UVB rays can wreak just as much havoc on our hair and scalp as they do on our skin? Melanoma is not limited to the skin on your body and face, and the rays of the sun are so powerful they can fade our hair color in as little as one weekend in the sun.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to be a hermit this summer to keep your scalp in tip top shape or protect your hair color. So, what can we do to protect our precious scalp and hair when we’re outside enjoying ourselves?
SPF, SPF, SPF:
When it comes to the scalp, treat it just like your skin like mentioned above. Don’t be afraid to apply some lightweight sunscreen right along your scalp line, and when you apply SPF to your face don’t neglect your hairline. We love the Inkey List Dewy Sunscreen for both uses, it’s lightweight enough to not leave your hairline or scalp feeling greasy.
If you don’t have any SPF handy, you can also utilize a hat or a head scarf. Just be aware that not all fabrics protect from UVA and UVB equally. For ultimate protection, you should be wearing SPF and a hat!
Protect Your Color:
Did you know that a lot of salon quality products contain SPF for your hair? Our favorites:
Amika Color-Lock Leave-In Conditioner
Kevin Murphy Un.Tangled Leave In Conditioner
Kevin Murphy Everlasting Color Leave In
The best way to use these is to prep your hair immediately after showering and before styling, they have SO many benefits beyond sun protection.
You should be adding an extra layer of these products if you plan on spending a significant amount of time outside during the day. Simply spritz throughout hair before you head out, and make sure you throw it in your beach bag to reapply after swimming!
