What Causes Hair Static and How to Fix It:

Tired of this dry winter season making your hair fly away the second you take off your scarf?

We get it! Read on.

Are static fly aways driving you crazy this winter? Don’t be too worried. Static is not an indication of damage in hair, but is actually caused by your becoming electrically charged!

Let's go back to science class for a second:

All matter is made up of ATOMS. All atoms are composed of protons, neutrons, and electrons.

When two objects are rubbed together (think of your hair plus a hat or scarf), sometimes those objects swap electrons and they create an electric charge.

The electricity between the two objects acts like a magnet, pushing them apart and creating those static fly aways that are so bothersome during the winter time.

Why is winter the only season we typically get hair static? If you live in the midwest, you’ll know this time of year is incredibly dry. The lack of humidity in the air allows for more static than usual when that friction is created between an object and your hair.

So, how do we prevent or fix static when it happens?

Preventing static is all about keeping your hair as hydrated as possible in the winter.

Swap out your current products for options that specifically focus on moisture.

Some examples (and our personal favorites from R and Co):

- Atlantis Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner

- High Dive or Waterfall Moisture and Shine Cream Leave in

If your hair is still feeling bone dry, consider swapping out your regular conditioner for a more intense moisture mask for a while, OR ask your stylist to add on a hydrating treatment at your next appointment!

Let’s say your hair is already full of static, after you get to work and take off your coat, a little hair oil/serum or hairspray will do the trick to break apart that electrical charge and get those flyways to lay back down.

Using hair oil after you finish styling for the day will also help lock in moisture from the hydrating products you’ve chosen to help banish static for good!

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, science wins the war between our hair and static. Keeping a travel sized hairspray, leave in or oil with you is the perfect solution for on the go.

Next time you struggle with dreaded winter static, try these suggestions! Don’t forget to ask your hairstylist what products they recommend to keep your specific hair type hydrated during the dry season.
